- J. G. Kohl
J. G. Kohl studied law, became a tutor, and then travelled in Russia in the 1830s. He returned to Germany in 1838 and published his impressions of Russia soon after. They were so enthusiastically received he decided to become a full-time travel writer. Further works were on Austria, England, Wales and Scotland, the USA and Canada but nothing equalled his success with Russia.
