Faber acquires picture book from FAB Prize entrants

Faber Chidren’s is thrilled to announce the acquisition of My Hair, the picture book debut of both writer Hannah Lee, and illustrator Allen Fatimarahan. This is the first acquisition by Faber from the entries to the Faber and Andlyn BAME (FAB) prize for undiscovered writers and illustrators. Hannah Lee was highly commended in 2017, and Allen Fatimaharan took second place for illustration in 2018. The FAB Prize has now opened for 2019, and entry details can be found here.

My Hair is the story of a young girl unsure about how to style her hair for a party, considering all the different hairstyles of her family, and celebrating black hair. Hannah Lee says “Its been amazing going on the journey of making my first book with people so dedicated to producing great work. I’ve felt very supported by the team at Faber & Faber, and that my opinion has been genuinely valued and appreciated.  Watching the words I have written go from black and white sketches, to characters and scenes coming to life in a wonderful translation of my vision by the brilliant Allen has been fantastic and I’m so excited to share my celebration and love of black hair with the world!”

World Rights for the text and illustration were purchased from Angharad Kowal Stannus at the Kowal Stannus Agency. Editor Stella Paskins says “My Hairis not only a joyful celebration of hair, Hannah Lee also shares a glorious insight into a whole lifestyle, inspired as it was by her friends and family. She is an explosive new star in picture books, and Allen Fatimaharen has perfectly brought to life her vision.”

Talking about the process of working on his first picture book with Hannah and Faber, Allen Fatimaharan adds “coming runner up in the FAB Illustration Prize has been a great experience. I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work with Hannah to illustrate her fantastic picture book text. Her characters and world have been a joy to illustrate. And I have learnt a lot about picture book making from working with art directors Margaret and Emma and the rest of the team at Faber.”
