Faber announces new short story collection from Emma Carroll
Emma Carroll returns to World War II with a thrilling new short story collection: When we were Warriors to Faber Children’s
The queen of historical fiction, best-selling author of the current Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month Secrets of a Sun King, Emma Carroll, returns to World War II with a collection of exciting new short stories of evacuation, dark secrets and an animal rescue service.
World Rights in When we were Warriors were acquired by Stella Paskins, Editor at Faber Children’s from Emily Talbot at United Agents. When we were Warriors will publish in February 2019.
With this irresistible return to World War II, the reader is taken back to the times of Emma Carroll’s most popular novels; with stories from the eras of both Letters from the Lighthouse and Frost Hollow Hall, Emma explores the resilience, resourcefulness and inventiveness of children when all around them the world is falling apart.
Inspired by the questions children have asked at schools and festival events, the stories in When We Were Warriors are sure to win over existing and soon-to-be-fans, with both exciting new, and more familiar, characters and places to discover,
Stella Paskins, editor at Faber Children’s, says:
‘I think that Emma Carroll is writing stories that children will be reading for years to come. These compelling adventures truly bring history to life and we’re thrilled to be publishing this book.’
Emma Carroll adds:
‘After Letters from the Lighthouse there were stories in my head still dying to be told, so it’s been an absolute treat to return to the era. As ever Faber listened, supported and got behind the project. I know I’m very lucky to work with such a brilliant team.’

About Faber Children’s:
Faber & Faber has published children’s books since 1929. Some of our very first publications included Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot starring the now world-famous Macavity, and The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Our catalogue at the time said that ‘it is by reading such books that children learn the difference between the shoddy and the genuine’. We still believe in the power of reading to transform children’s lives.
