Faber Members Book Club 2018: Lullaby by Leïla Slimani

Join our first 2018 Faber Members book club:  Lullaby by Leïla Slimani

The Faber Members book club will return in the new year with the international bestseller and winner of the Prix Goncourt, Lullaby.

And we couldn’t be more excited to begin our 2018 reading with Leïla Slimani’s chilling, tense and completely compulsive novel about a French couple who find their idyllic world shattered by their seemingly perfect nanny.

‘Is Lullaby the next Gone Girl? This author’s book on a killer nanny is [a] must-read.’ — Daily Telegraph

About the book

The baby is dead. It only took a few seconds.

When Myriam, a mother and brilliant French-Moroccan lawyer, decides to return to work after having children, she and her husband are forced to look for the perfect       caretaker for their two young children. They never dreamed they would find Louise: a quiet, polite and devoted woman who sings to their children, cleans the family’s chic apartment in Paris’s upscale tenth arrondissement, stays late without co

mplaint and is able to host enviable birthday parties.

The couple and nanny become more dependent on each other. As jealousy, resentment and suspicions increase, Myriam and Paul’s idyllic tableau is shattered. Lullaby is a compulsive, riveting and bravely observed exploration of power, class, race, domesticity and motherhood – and the English-language debut of an immensely talented writer.

‘Being able to discuss 4 3 2 1 with a like-minded online group as we were reading the book, section by section, week by week was such an enriching experience, both in appreciation of the text and author, and having some great folk to talk about the book with. I’d love to do it again.’

— Annabel, 4 3 2 1 book club member

‘The book club gave me a chance to pause and take stock, hearing other insightful comments and points of view before moving on. It definitely enriched the reading experience for me.’
